The 39-year-old announced via his official Twitter account that he’s looking forward to his new job, which will be his first serious step towards professional management.

“Honoured to be assistant coach for Belgium. Thanks to Roberto Martinez and the Royal Belgian FA. Very excited. Can’t wait,” said the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker.

Up until recently, the World Cup and Euro Championship winner worked as Arsenal’s Under-18 coach, however he resigned that post last month. Despite assuming new responsibilities with the Belgian FA, it is believed the job won’t come in conflict with his punditry work at Sky Sports.

Martinez, who was officially unveiled as the new Belgian boss at the start of this month, commented on the Frenchman’s ‘collective mentality’ and great experience at international level – an asset that could give them the edge against their opponents.

“Thierry is an important figure. He will bring something different,” commented the 43-year-old manager. “He agreed right away to join us. He is someone who knows how to develop a collective mentality, how to work together to win. He won the World Cup in 1998 and has the experience to achieve great things”
