El Clasico Film chronicles the tale of two brothers – each of whom support the opposing sides in La Liga – that have to overcome both physical and emotional challenges to catch a glimpse of the Spanish football spectacle.
The Spanish rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has been epitomized in Halkawt Mustafa’s ‘El Clasico Film,’ which was released at the beginning of the year, but has now been selected by Iraq as the official pick for contention for the Foreign Language Oscar category.
Mustafa highlighted that it took him a full year of convincing Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes about meeting the Real Madrid star, but in the end persistence paid off for the young director. However, the trailer for El Clasico Film does not reveal whether the brothers get to hand over the shoes to Ronaldo himself, so make sure to check out before this weekend’s clash at the Nou Camp.
“I spent a year asking his agent and in the end we did get to meet him. I was really happy to make Wyra’s (the lead actor) dream come true,” commented the 31-year-old director. “Before you meet Ronaldo, you think he is something different, but when you meet him you realize how nice he is.”
The inspiration for the title of the film comes from Mustafa’s experience a few years back when he got frightened by fan celebrations as Real Madrid had beaten their arch rivals Barcelona, and that moment proved to be the inception for the creation of the film.
“A few years ago, while I was working on a documentary in northern Iraq, loud demonstrations nearly scared me off,” Mustafa recalled. “It actually only turned out to be an enthusiastic crowd celebrating the victory of Real over its favourite rival. That gave me an idea for a film, and I for two Kurdish brothers on board, who I already knew, with an epic quad bike ride.”
Barcelona have hit a string of poor performances in the league in recent times, while Real Madrid have taken advantage of their slump in form by extending the lead to six points at the top of the table. But since the first El Clasico of the 2016/17 campaign will take place at the Nou Camp this weekend (December 3), Barcelona are the favourites to capture the all-important three points, which would nonetheless see Los Merengues maintain their position at the top of the table.
Zinedine Zidane’s men have not lost a single match this season (10 wins, 3 draws and 0 losses), which has helped them collect 33 points so far. Despite winning back-to-back La Liga titles over the last two season, the Catalan giants have claimed only 27 points from the first 13 rounds – which is pretty low considering the crop of players they boast.
Although Luis Enrique’s men have been dealt favourite status ahead of the highly anticipated match, we believe a draw between the two sides is on the cards, based on the performances of both sides. And what could ruin Barcelona’s plans is that Ronaldo seems to have rediscovered his form recently, after a slow start to the season. Perhaps the fact that he’s mentioned in the El Clasico Film has aided the Portuguese’s efforts on goal – after all, he seems to be motivated by a little vanity at times.
